Project Overview

The client was unsatisfied with the look and feel of their homegrown WordPress site. They needed a new modern theme that would be easier to maintain and more user-friendly. The client (a husband and wife team) already had a great body of content and products that they are selling to teachers and homeschool families.

Technical Challenges

  • The client was using a collection of plugins and tools that I was unfamiliar with.
  • The content could not be migrated and would need to be re-built
  • The client’s content was poorly organized and customers unable to find products and classes
  • The client added a request to add a gallery of their newsletters to the site.

Solution

Working with Miro, I created the site architecture, reorganizing the content to make it more user-friendly. I decided to try the latest full-site editing features, using the theme called Ollie. This was before it was allowed in the WordPress theme directory. It looked clean and modern, with patterns I knew would be useful for the client. For the newsletter gallery, I created a block plugin that added an ACF repeater field in the backend where he could add the various types of newsletters they were sending out.

Prior to my web development career and while earning a Master’s in Education, I taught print media at the college level. Binding this with skills in marketing I was able to identify resources and tools which eventually helped them in many ways. For example, I introduced them to a Makerspace where they were able to reach a larger audience, learn 3D printing, laser cutting. From there I helped them make connections with a co-working space which lead to finding a safe new location for their STEM classes. Because of this, they invited me to join their board of directors where I might make a greater impact.
