Synopsis
The NSBF is a non-profit providing tourism information to travel bureaus. NSBF received a grant from Toyota to make specific destination information accessible from state pages but the work needed to be completed fast.
Challenges
- The client needed the site to be completed in 1 month
- The site needed to be responsive and accessible
- The client needed to be able to update the site content without touching each and every page
Solution
In order to arrive at a solution that works for all the stakeholders, I setup Figma to create desktop and mobile mockups. This added time but was a necessary step to ensure the project captured a consistent set of data and could be delivered without rework.
At the same time the design began, the client identified a group of volunteers who were sourcing the content and images. We setup a Google Sheet that could organize the different types of content and paths to images. Images were added to a directory in WordPress root. Using WP All Import we pulled the content from spreadsheets and images to update the database and media library. Because we were using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF), the data could be seamlessly merged into templates and deployed to pages for each state and byway.
I implemented the solution using Laravel Mix with Webpack plus the latest Tailwind CSS configuration producing tiny files. Utilizing accessibility linting tools conducted tests for the project site and deployed an improved code structure. The data needed to be cleaned and reorganized to make sure the content would import without glitches.
Key Achievements
- Developed architecture and design for rapid delivery and development
- Set client satisfaction completing the project on time
- Set realistic expectations for the client and volunteers
- Created a process for updating the site content, still in use today
Since this project, I have continued to work with the client to improve the site and add new features.
